How Is Standardization Achieved In Defense Industry?

Standardization; is the process that allows all staff, eg teachers, evaluators and quality controllers to interpret and monitor the requirements of the program or qualification in the same way. Standardizing the practice allows people to work as a team, not on their own, and helps to provide an equal service to those who want to learn the relevant job.

There are many standards used in Defense Industry from the centers where the products are developed and produced until they go to the end user. These standards; In this field, it establishes military alliances that developed countries and countries are members of, making joint decisions.

Countries which developed and producing products in the Defense Industry and technology, publish a large number of standards in this field, either through their international organizations, or directly on their behalf. The United States, which is the leader in the Defense Industry, is also the leader in publishing standards. Standards published by the US Department of Defense are coded with MIL-STD-XXXX. The most used of these are;

  • MIL-STD-810G: ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS AND LABORATORY TESTS
  • MIL-STD-202G: TEST METHOD STANDARD ELECTRONIC AND ELECTRICAL COMPONENT PARTS
  • MIL-STD-461: ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE CHARACTERISTICS REQUIREMENTS FOR EQUIPMENT
  • MIL-STD-167: MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS OF SHIPBOARD EQUIPMENT

The most important and biggest one of the alliances that publish standards is NATO. NATO has set standards for equipment used by the armies, and armies of member states must comply with these standards. Turkey is also a country member of the NATO military alliance since 18 February 1952, and must comply with these standards as other members. TSK determines the compliance of all kinds of military equipment to NATO and purchases accordingly. This preference necessitates Turkish Defense Industry manufacturers to produce products that comply with NATO standards.

STANAG standards are published in English and French by NATO’s standardization office in Brussels. Standards are coded as STANAG-XXX. It has a wide range from armored vehicles to ships, from individual equipment to tactical doctrines. The most common STANAG standards are;

 

  • STANAG 2310 : 7.62x51mm NATO bullets being standard in infantry rifles
  • STANAG 4569: Protection levels standard for logistics and light armored vehicles
  • STANAG 4586: Unmanned Control System Unmanned Aircraft interoperability NATO Standard Interface
  • STANAG 3838 MIL-STD-1553: Mechanical, electrical and functional properties of the serial data way

 

Companies have to test whether the products they manufacture comply with the standards. Otherwise, they cannot sell or export to the army of the country in which they are located. If a firm wishes to obtain a certificate of conformity to a standard, it can obtain tests that are issued by the internationally conforming test laboratories, which issued the certificate of conformity. There is companies performing these tests, also the companies that produce the product may have test laboratories if they meet the necessary conditions.
