Fog computing is a network architectural type that connect the cloud computing to IOT. Fog computing is also known as fog network. Fog computing is a data processing architecture that stands between end devices (data producing things) and the cloud. It performs data storage and information processing in itself instead of cloud data centers.
The main reason of emerging of fog computing is to decrease the data amount for data processing, storage and analyzing. Data decomposition and analyzing performed in an intelligent gateway. Therefore, the amount of data is limited that must be sent to the cloud for processing. The data that needs to be processed in a lump will be analyzed in gateway (inside the network). The rest of them will be filtered and directly send to the cloud.
Fog Computing Applications
There are a lot of potential application areas where fog computing is used and can be used. The interest in IOT is not only in private sector but also in public sector. In this sense, the applications will become widespread. Some examples of fog computing are as follows:
•Smart cities and smart grids
In order for smart city systems operate without any problems, effectively and efficiently, data collecting, and data processing must be performed in real time. The data coming from the sensors will be processed faster with fog computing. For this reason, any problem that can be emerged will be solved fast.
•Autonomous Vehicles
Autonomous vehicles can be functioned as fog computing device. Because, they have huge data processing ability. Vehicles must take data from multiple sensors, perform real time data analysis, and after that must be respond accordingly. This will allow an autonomous vehicle to drive safely in the absence of a cloud connection.
•Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
Production facilities use fog computing devices to collect and process huge amount of data in a local unit instead of cloud. Therefore, the amount of data packages that need to be processed by cloud will be decreased and it will be ensured that the necessary actions can be responded to faster.
Fog Computing and 5G Technology
The devices that use fog computing are also called fog node unit. These nodes are processed the data received from the sensors in real time with a response time of milliseconds. The nodes periodically send the analytical summary information to the cloud. After that, a cloud-based application analyzed the data received from several nodes.
5G provides high speed connection to analyze the data in almost real time. Therefore, the action commands realized between fog nodes and cloud will be processed in milliseconds.
As a result, fog computing is expected to be used more in the next years. Because its application area is wide, and it will make a rapid development with 5G technology. It should not be forgotten that fog computing functioned as a architectural structure to relieve the cloud computing not replace it.
