What is VLC (Visible Light Communication)?

We are using artificial light in every part of our lives such as ceiling lights, phone screens, vehicle’s headlamps. Known that there are a lot of artificial light sources the same as these examples in the World.

After the internet of things notion has entered to our lives, not only computers and smartphones but also cars, lightings, wristwatches, coffee machines, refrigerators and washing machines became connect to the internet.

Thanks to the ability of the Modern LEDs, the new communication form that artificial light is used as a communication device has been developed. VLC (Visible Light Communication) is the communication method in which visible light in the frequency range of 400-800 THz is used as a communication device.

VLC is the ultra-fast data transmission technology that used the light to send and get the message at a distance. Light travels 299.792 km in a second, that means it is the fastest communication device. VLC uses the visible light between 375 and 780 mm which is visible by human eye.

In VLC technology the data which in the form of ones and zeros is transmits by turning the light off and on quickly. Data transmission depends on how quickly turning the light off and on. That is why LED lighting is very suitable for VLC applications.

A transmitter (LEDs) and a receiver (photodetector) are needed for VLC. The information which received from the data source transmits to LED by the driver. LED transmits the data to the opposite photodetector by quickly flashes. The receiver, module analyses the signals and transforms them into original data. Operations such as data packaging, hardware control, encoding and decoding, error processing and synchronization are carried out by software.

VLC cannot pass through the walls because it is using visible lights for data transfer. So, it is totally safe. Known that VLC does not cause any damage to human health.

VLC, the fastest way of data communication, is used in smart lighting, infrastructure and transportation technologies, healthcare, aviation, and many similar areas.
